What we're reading: Bedtime Stories

I think reading before bed is one of life's simple pleasures. There's nothing quite like settling in under the covers wearing fresh pyjamas (perhaps with a cup of tea in hand), knowing the days work is done and you can read, undisturbed, for a little while.

The aim of the bedtime routine with children is to gently lead them to rest, but let's be honest, it can sometimes be a noisy and stressful affair. I think this is why I treat reading with Leo before his bedtime different to when we read together during the day.

I try choose books at bedtime that evoke a stillness, there's often less narrative and more poetry.

Two favourites that we always come back to are Kissed by the Moon by Alison Lester, and Goodnight Little One by Margaret Wise Brown.

I even feel calmer for reading them because the words sound better when spoken slowly. These books are lullabies with beautiful illustrations that don't overwhelm the eyes. I'd highly recommend them!
